ALLLERGIC RHINITIS

It is an inflammation of the nasal membranes that is characterized by sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and rhinorrhea, in any combination. An allergen is an otherwise harmless substance that causes an allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is an allergic response to specific allergens.

Mechanism behind Allergic Rhinitis –

Upon exposure to an allergen, allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE),is produced . These IgE antibodies bind to IgE receptors on mast cells in the respiratory mucosa and to basophils in the peripheral blood. When the body is re-exposed to same allergen, the IgE antibodies gets attached on the cell surface by allergen, resulting in activation of the cell. Mast cells in the nasal tissues release preformed and granule-associated chemical mediators, which cause the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
